The ApHC European Futurity/Maturity Program (the “Appaloosa EFP”) is organised by the European Appaloosa Foundation (the “EAF”) under the following rules:
1. Exhibitors eligibility
- An exhibitor may show as many horses in as many classes as they are eligible for. During the first years of the EFP, only the Open division (as per the ApHC Rulebook) is organised. The EAF will reassess every year the possibility to organise NonPro and Youth divisions.
- Membership to the APHC and to a European National Association (member of the EAF) is required for all owners and exhibitors.
2. Eligibility of the Horse
Any horse considered as an appaloosa under the APHC regulations, whether born in Europe or elsewhere in the world, can be nominated in the Appaloosa EFP under the following rules:
A. Nomination of the Sire

|
- In principle, to be eligible to the Appaloosa EFP, a horse must be sired by a stallion who was nominated to the Appaloosa EFP for the relevant breeding year (the “Nominated Stallion”). Horses that are not sired by a Nominated Stallion can nevertheless be enrolled in the Appaloosa EFP under certain conditions (see below the rules regarding the Enrollment of a horse that is not an Eligible Foal).
Exemple :
|
a) Horses sired by Nominated Stallions are eligible to the Full EFP Purse.
b) Horses not sired by Nominated Stallions are only eligible to the Limited EFP Purse. |
- To be nominated, the stallion nomination fee must be paid between the 01/07 of the year prior to the breeding year and the 31/03 of the breeding year, at the latest. As a transitional rules for the 2022 breeding year, the stallion nomination fee must be paid before the 30/06.
Exemple :
|
a) The first year for which a stallion can be a Nominated Stallion under the Appaloosa EFP is the 2022 breeding year. For that purpose, the stallion nomination fee has to be paid for the 30/06/2022.
b) For the 2023 breeding year, a stallion can be a Nominated Stallion under the Appaloosa EFP if the stallion nomination fee is paid between the 01/07/2022 and the 31/03/2023. |
- Stallion nomination fee (see point 5 below for the 2022 breeding year):
- If a breeding of the Stallion is offered for sale at the Service Stallion Auction (“SSA”) organized by the EAF, the nomination fee equals to 50% of the stallion breeding fee (incl. breeding fee and all other related costs) applied for the relevant breeding year (with a minimum of 500 euros).
- The SSA will be held annually at the European Appaloosa Championship.
- In case the breeding offered (and the nomination fee paid) before the live SSA is purchased during or after the SSA, the stallion owner receives 100% of the nomination fee back and the money paid for the breeding at the SSA is kept by the EAF. If a stallion service is not directly purchased during the auction, mare owners can still purchase the stallion services until March 30 of the breeding year.
- Stallions can still be offered for sale under the SSA rules after the live auction until 30 March of the breeding year. In that case, if the breeding offered is purchased, the stallion owner only receives 50 % of the nomination fee back upon purchase.
- In case the breeding offered is NOT purchased during or after the auction, the EAF keeps the nomination fee and the breeding offered is given back to the stallion owner.
- Stallion owners who do not wish to auction their stallion’s service can also nominate their Stallions (“Non SSA Stallion”). In this case, the nomination fee equals to the full breeding fee of the nominated stallion (minimum breeding fee = 500 Euros / Private Treaty = 3.000 Euros) and no breeding will be offered for sale at the SSA.
- SSA Stallions and Non SSA Stallions will be considered as Nominated Stallion for the breeding year following the SSA.
- The SSA will be held during the annual European Appaloosa Championship.
- The owner of a Nominated Stallion receives a free enrollment for a foal born in the year following the breeding year for which the stallion is nominated.
- Everyone who buys a breeding out of the SSA will receive one free entry for their first futurity class for the foal resulting out of this breeding and also a voucher of 25€ for the enrollment of the foal.
- The SSA proceeds (if the breeding is sold) and the nomination fees (if the breeding is not sold or if no breeding is offered for auction) will generate the Nominated Stallion Purse. The Nominated Stallion Purse will only benefit to EFP Full Eligible Horses.
- At the end of breeding seasons, Stallion owners of Nominated Stallion must provide the EAF with the stallion report of their Nominated Stallion. Only the ApHC foals mentioned on the stallion report of the Nominated Stallions (SSA Stallions and Non SSA Stallions) are eligible to the EFP (“Eligible Foal”) and can benefit from the Full EFP Purse.
B. Enrollment of the Eligible Foal
- As from 2023, Eligible Foals may be enrolled in the Appaloosa EFP by way of the payment of the following enrollment fees at any time beginning from their date of birth and through their eight-year-old year:
- Weanling enrollments: one-time payment of 100 euros;
- Yearling enrollments: one-time payment of 200 euros;
- 2 and 3 years old enrollments: one-time payment of 250 euros;
- 4 years old and over enrollments: one-time payment of 300 euros.
- 7 years old and over enrollments: one-time payment of 150 euros.
- The EAF also offers a sliding scale for multiple foal enrollments (i.e. when multiple foals are owned by the same owner – ownership is determined based on the APHC register).
- Once the one-time enrollment fee is paid, the horse is eligible to be shown in the relevant Futurity and Maturity classes, until the horse reached the age of 8 (the “EFP Full Eligible Horse”).
- The enrollment fees will generate the Enrollment Purse. The Enrollment Purse will benefit to EFP Full Eligible Horses and to EFP Limited Eligible Horse.
C. Enrollment of a horse that is not an Eligible Foal
- When a horse is not an Eligible Foal because he was not sired by a Nominated Stallion, such horse may still be enrolled in the EFP according to the following rules:
- The horse will be enrolled if a one-time surplus fee of 50€ is paid in addition to the enrollment fee applicable to Eligible Foals.
- The enrollment fees will generate the Enrollment Purse.
- Once the one-time enrollment fee is paid, the horse is eligible to be shown in the relevant Futurity and Maturity classes, until the horse reached the age of 8 but is considered as an EFP Limited Eligible Horse and not a EFP Full Eligible Horse.
- Contrary to EFP Full Eligible Horse, EFP Limited Eligible Horse can only benefit from the Enrollment Purse (and not the Nominated Stallion Purse) – see below for more details.
D. Certificate of Registration
- Upon completion of an enrollment, horse owners will receive a Certificate of Registration. This Certificate of Registration is the only mean of proof that the horse is an EFP Full or Limited Eligible Horse and must be presented in order to be allowed to show in any Futurity / Maturity classes organized under the Appaloosa EFP.
- In case of loss, duplicated Certificate of Registration may be obtained but additional fees will be charged by the EAF.
3. Payback of Purses
- The Futurity/Maturity prize money amounts 1000 euros (500 euros from the Nominated Stallion Purse + 500 euros from the Enrollment Purse) + 50% payback by class (the “Futurity Purse”).
- The Futurity Purse is created by the Nominated Stallion Purse and the Enrollment Purse:
- the Nominated Stallion Purse is generated by Stallion nomination fees and SSA proceeds ;
- the Enrollment Purse is generated by enrollment fees.
- The entry fee of a Futurity/Maturity class is 90 euros.
- The Futurity Purse is shared as follow between the 3 first horses of the Futurity/Maturity class:
- First: 60%
- Second: 25%
- Third: 15%
- The Futurity Purse is paid under the condition that 3 horses minimum are showed in the relevant class. If not, only the 50% payback will be paid to the exhibitors.
- EFP Limited Eligible Horses are only entitled to benefit from the Enrollment Purse and the 50% Payback.
- For example, if the 1st EFP Full Eligible horse is 3rd in the final ranking of the futurity class, he will be considered as 3rd for the Enrollment Purse and the 50% Payback but 1rst for the Nominated Stallion Purse.
- The EAF will reassess every year the possibility to amend the amount of the Futurity Purse.
- The earnings of EFP Full Eligible Horses are distributed as follow:
- The person who nominated the Stallion receives 10%;
- The person who nominated the foal receives 10%; and
- the horse owner[1] at the date of the Futurity class receives 80% of the horse earnings.
- The earnings of EFP Limited Eligible Horses are distributed as follow:
- The person who nominated the foal receives 10%, and
- the horse owner[2] at the date of the Futurity class received 90%.
- If a Horse ownership changes, the person who originally nominated the foal and paid the nomination fee will receive the 10% earnings.
- Each year, over eight years, the Payback of Purse is paid out following the European Appaloosa Foundation Futurity, on the bank accounts mentioned in the relevant nomination forms and registration application for the Futurity/Maturity.

- The Entry fee for a Futurity and Maturity class is 90 euros. The Futurity class will never be “class in class”.
- In addition to the Futurity and Maturity classes, the leading sire, the leading dam and the leading breeder of the year will be honored.
5. Transitional years (2022)
- The first Futurity/Maturity classes will be organized at the 2022 European Appaloosa Championship.
- For the transition: Notwithstanding the Stallion Nomination and the Horse Enrollment Rules described above, any horse born in 2022 and before can be enrolled to the EFP in 2022 for a fix transitional fee of:
- 200 euros for horses aged 3 and below
- 150 euros for horses aged 4 and over
- 50 euros for horses aged 8 in 2022.
- Once the Transitional fee is paid, the horse will be considered as a Full EFP Eligible Horse, eligible to be shown in the relevant Futurity and Maturity classes, until the horse reached the age of 8. They would thus be entitled to benefit from the Full EFP Purse.
- The Transitional fee must be paid by 30 June 2022 (extended to 17 September 2022) at the latest or 6 months after the foal is born (if foaling year is 2022). After these dates, the rules and fees applicable for the Enrollment of a horse that is not an Eligible Foal will apply and the horse will not be considered as Full EFP Eligible Horse.
- A stallion owner can nominate a stallion for the 2022 breeding year (to be considered as a nominated Stallion of the 2022 breeding year, so foals to be born in 2023 can be Full EFP Eligible Horse) at a fixed fee of 150 euros.
